Hello Darkness, My Old Friend

January 29, 2010
By Marc Kay

[Poetry]

Dark, dark, oh so dark
Yet also comforting; the warm blackness
You can turn on the lights.
You might even succeed in bringing in some warmth,
Possibly even a breath of fresh air.
But the black hole will always be there
Hovering
Ready to welcome you with open arms
To engulf you
So u can then let go and feel the warmth
of the black nothingness.
Nothing needs to be said
Aside for the cerebral chatter
at the speed of darkness.
Everything is self understood.
And if it isn’t, that’s o.k. as well.
For you don’t need a reason
Nor does darkness need a reason
To stick out its ugly head, and take over
For when it has the strength, or you the weakness
Darkness will rule.
Welcome to the black hole; please have a seat, and no talking.

    “at the speed of darkness.”

    Love that line.

Your poem made me think of one of the lines in MEDEA by Euripides.

“The old songs will have to change.
No more hymns to our faithlessness and deceit.
Apollo, god of song, lord of the lyre,
never passed on the flame of poetry to us.
But if we had that voice, what songs
we’d sing of men’s failings, and their blame.”
    (Medea. 430)

    You have that voice, Marc.

Marc, very beautifully written. Yes, dark indeed, but with glimmers of light and hope. And little bits of humor.

Last line’s a winner: “Welcome to the black hole; please have a seat, and no talking.”

    Love it.

And the photo’s superb. Great pairing.

Oh, and love the Simon & Garfunkel title. Call me a 70’s sentimentalist if you wish, although I was barely born and certainly didn’t hear their music then.

Brilliant ! Superb ! Reminds me of Bob Dylan’s “Its a Hard Rain Thats Gonna Fall” – Where the color is BLACK; And the number is ZERO.

Marc, this sounds like you are in terrible pain. I am so sorry. Is there something we can do? I don’t understand why other posters are encouraging it – it seems like a cry for help. I hope you are okay and can speak to someone.
The writing was done very well and the picture is beautiful but the content troubles me.
    Please be safe

Marc reading this poem really brought tears to my eyes.

It isn’t just a beautiful poem its much more then that..

I wish there was a easy remedy to take away the darkness but unfortunately their isn’t.. As a friend I want to take all your pain away I want to stay by your side in both the good times and the bad.. Please know that I’m here for you let me hold your hand and find a way to overcome it together..

    I love you Marc xoxo
