Buddy, can you spare an eye? Or a heart? Or a kidney? Israel has a problem with organ donation, mostly due to halachic problems involved, which makes it problematic for the Orthodox (and perhaps the more traditional secular Israelis) to becoming donors. Israel is now trying to solve it in creative ways, like giving priority to organ donors when they themselves need an organ, and by providing monetary compensation, often thousands of dollars. Greenback truly is the universal language, and the most persuasive language at that. Often involving very few actual words.
Holden Caulfied? Name ring a bell? The caustic and irreverent protagonist of J. D. Salnger’s classic Catcher in the Rye will live on, despite the death of his famously enigmatic creator yesterday at the age of 91. Caulfield wasn’t a Chasidic rebel, let’s make no mistake about it. But he is the hero of the goddamn-you-all-I’m-doing-my-own-thing philosophy. And in that respect he’s one of us.
Bribing a math teacher, now that’s an enterprising student. But that was only the start of a carrer in corruption-maestro-turned-government-informant for Solomon Dwek, who admitted yesterday in federal court to more than a decade of misdeeds including mortgage fraud, tax evasion, paying off public officials and rigging auctions for his father’s non-profit religious school. And the above mentioned math-teacher bribery. Teach ‘em early folks, and it’ll last a lifetime.
Skverer Chasidim, despite the sect’s roots in tsarist Russia, are not known for heavy drinking. But that didn’t stop them from using their shul in Montreal to hoard large quantities of alcoholic beverages, purchased illegally from Ontario, where alcohol is cheaper. Word has it the illegal stuff was being hoarded (where else?) in the mikveh, which would seem sort of characteristic for Skver. Well, not in the actual mikveh – even Skverers use water for that – but somewhere in its vicinity.
