Announcing: Submission Contest
Unpious.com has been up for one week now, and has been successful beyond expectations. We’ve received a fair number of excellent submissions, but we’re still looking for more, and we want them better than ever. To that end we’re announcing Unpious.com’s first Submission Contest.
First prize: $200.00
Second prize: $50.00
Third prize: Honorable mention
Send us your best piece and enter to qualify for first, second, or third prize. All submissions must adhere to our submission guidelines. Submissions should be emailed to unpious.submissions@gmail.com with the word “CONTEST” in the subject line.
The contest will be open for two weeks; all eligible submissions must be received by midnight of Monday, Feb 1, 2010. Submissions will be judged by a three judge panel, consisting of three regular contributors. Judges will choose the three best articles. Readers will then vote for best, second best, and third best articles. Only one vote per person, based on IP address. Votes will be entered on a special post provided for that purpose.
By sending a submission, you grant permission to Unpious.com to post your submission, regardless of whether it wins or not.
Prize money has been granted by an anonymous friend of Unpious.com, whose support has been consistent and invaluable in so many ways, and to whom we are supremely grateful. Prize money will be sent to the winners by check or through Paypal.
Show off your writing skills, and help us grow our community, by and for Chasidim on the fringe.

I would love someone to write a piece about the argument that without religion we would have no morals and we’d all be cheating on our spouses. In particular, it intrigues me that JP implies that without relgion he would have no problem cheating on his wife. What does that say about his marriage.

Anon guy — I don’t have exact links handy, but the subject has certainly been dealt with. (There’s also a book out there called, I believe, Good Without God; check Amazon.)
I do think it would make an interesting discussion here; but it’s a somewhat complex topic, IMO, and the subject tends to elicit rants and rambles rather than a carefully nuanced and thoughtful analysis. But if someone could do a well-thought-out piece on it, that would be awesome.

Seems like the ad clicking is bringing in some revenue, enough to even fund a contest now…

What are the judging criterias? What’s the definition of a $200 post? Is it one that provokes a furious trail of comments, is quality of writing, is it originality?

Not even close. The ads cover site maintenance, and barely that. This really is the generous gift of a donor.

Well, the three finalists will be picked by Unpious.com judges for overall writing quality. Of those three, we leave it to the readers to pick the best, using whatever criteria they choose: most thought-provoking, best-written, funniest, most-original, you name it. I suppose you can say, whichever resonates with readers most will win.
