Tu B’shvat Murmurs

January 30, 2010
By Danny Saunders

From the comments on a Facebook invite for a traditional Friday night meal:

Host: “I need someone to help me with the zemiros.”

Token non-Jewish girl on the invite list: “What’s a zemiro?”

Overheard at Tu B’shvat meal:

Host is cutting open a purple-skinned fruit with black dots inside.

Chasidish bucher who just joined the party: “What’s that?!”

Host: “Dragonfruit.”

CB musing to himself: “As if a kiwi isn’t gay enough.”

Line Break

Author: Danny Saunders (3 Articles)

Danny Saunders grew up in Williamsburg in the 1940's as the son of a Rebbe--an American-style Rebbe, known as Reb Saunders, instead of Reb Yankele, or Reb Moishele, or Reb Itzikel. Which explains how a rebbish kind ends up at Hirsch college studying psychology. Danny is said to now hang around Borough Park where he styles himself a "family therapist" but spends most of his time downstairs at Shomrei Shabbos, and takes his meals at Masbia. He's also seen occasionally at the Millinery Synagogue on Thursday nights hogging the cholent.
