Al Pacino

Al Pacino, noted actor from the Godfather trilogy, showed up this week at a Borough Park synagogue to observe the prayers, and was later invited to the home of a local for some coffee and cheesecake. Pacino is reportedly doing research for an upcoming role in which he is to portray Shylock, the money-grubbing Jew from Shakespeare’s play, The Merchant of Venice. Apparently, Borough Park seemed like the best place to find Shylock’s modern day equivalents.

The Toronto Police Service published a statistical report of hate crimes investigated in 2009. The list of victim categories include: Jewish, black, LGBT, and out of left field, “non-Jewish Shiksa.” Non-Jewish shiksa? Definitely a slur. The “non-Jewish” part though, since, as all our dear shiksa friends will attest, “shiksa” alone is a term of endearment.

Chasidim and hipsters are coming together on the treadmills, bicycles, and elliptical machines around the Williamsburg area. David Lowey, said to be either a Satmar or Pupa Chasid, has shed 60 pounds down to his current 290-pound frame by attending Green Fitness on South 6th street. Isaac Abraham supports it, but has yet to become a gym member himself. Another community member who gave his name as “Yoel” is a little more cautious. Says “Yoel,” “I myself am very confused about what my parents would think. I for sure hide it from them… I would never be able to make good shidduchim… if this would be public.”

A petition has been handed to Israel’s High Court of Justice to force ultra-Orthodox schools to teach core subjects such as English, science, and math. Deputy Education Minister Rabbi Meir Porush, when asked to comment on the petition, asked, “Why should they have the right to dictate to us how to act, how to educate our children, how to conduct our lifestyle?” Fair question, why indeed? Well, maybe it has something to do with the state providing 60% of their budget.

A court in Florida issued an order of protection against a man for using “bad Yiddish words” in front of his daughter. The daughter does not fully understand Yiddish.

Al Pacino, after visiting BP, might withdraw to play that role…

And hey, if in israel, where the State finance 60% of their budget, has the right to dictate their education… How about USA, or NY at least, where 85% is by the government, imagine they comment on our education… Put aside the protest in Manhattan or in Albany, but the ‘Mi Ke’Mchu Yisroal’ campaign, and every Jewish Named organization, will try to play their role there… Can’t wait

I’m a little confused. Al Pacino already played Shylock a couple years ago. His version of The Merchant of Venice (a really good one, in my opinion) came out in 2004.

Oh, I read the article and it does mention the movie. Still, I don’t know why he would need to do more research if he’s portraying a character that he’s already done before.

I had to check the date of this blog post, because I was sure Pacino had played Shylock years ago. Seems like a natural fit. Will be interesting.
