Pride Without Prejudice
It was the first Pride parade I’ve ever attended, and the spirit of love and diversity was intoxicating, as crowds ten deep clogged Fifth Avenue to watch the rainbow-hued celebration of acceptance. I gulped water to stave off sun stroke and cheered as loud as I could, relishing the anonymity of a crowd that strips away all shyness. Some of my favorite parts of the parade: Dykes on Bikes in all their leather and colorful glory, Governor Cuomo, courageous gay Police Officers, and the senior citizen marching to his own drummer in twelve inch heels. With all the hate that swirls around our world, it was invigorating to be part of a celebration of love.
In honor of the weekend, I thought I’d list just a few of the many many NYC LGBT resources that might be of interest to Unpiousers – please add additional ideas in the comments:
The LGBT Community Center: Provides services and support to LGBT individuals.
JQYouth: A support and social group for frum and formerly frum LGBT youth.
Beit Simchat Torah Synagogue: “Passionate, provocative, and deeply Jewish, CBST champions a Judaism that rejoices in diversity, denounces social injustice wherever it exists, and strives for human rights for all people.”
OrthoGays: Info and resources on being gay and frum.
Trembling Before God: A movie about orthodox men and women struggling with their gay identity.Printable Version
